A man accused of bludgeoning a six-month-old pitbull-cross puppy to death with a golf club has been jailed for two years and four months.

Te Kuiti man Mathew Awhi George pleaded guilty in April to wilfully ill-treating an animal, possessing an offensive weapon and threatening behaviour.

George told the Te Kuiti District Court he had killed the dog because it “bit the hand that fed him”.

He threatened police with an axe, shovel and steel bar when they tried to intervene during the attack. A subsequent stand off with officers lasted 35 minutes.

George will serve his sentence on the three charges cumulatively.
